Wang Yi Talks about Xi Jinping's Trip to South East Asia: Steering the Course of Sino-US Relations
Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Chinese President Xi Jinping's trip to South East Asia will steer the course of Sino-US relations.
According to China News Agency, Xi Jinping was invited to Bali, Indonesia to attend the 17th G20 Summit from November 14 to 19, and went to Bangkok, Thailand to attend the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) informal leaders' meeting and visit Thailand. At the end of the trip, Wang Yi briefed accompanying reporters on the visit.
Wang Yi said that in recent years, in response to the serious misjudgment of China's strategic direction by the United States and the series of negative trends caused by it, China has carried out a resolute struggle to defend its own sovereignty, security and development interests, showing its firm will to defend its own sovereignty, security and development interests. At present, China-US relations are facing a key node where to go. All countries in the world are concerned about the direction of China-US relations, and generally expect the relationship between the two countries to return to the track of healthy and stable development.
Wang Yi said that Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden held a face-to-face meeting in Bali and had candid and in-depth communication on major issues related to China-US relations and world peace and development, which was constructive and strategic. This is the first face-to-face meeting between the heads of state of China and the United States in more than three years, especially since the epidemic, and it is also a bilateral event that the international community pays the most attention to during the G20 summit.
Wang Yi said that Xi Jinping emphasized that China-US relations should be viewed and handled from the perspective of grasping the general trend of the world, abandon the zero-sum game thinking of you lose and I win, and you rise and I decline, establish dialogue rather than confrontation, and win-win rather than zero-sum exchanges. The tone, adhere to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, and jointly ensure that China-US relations move forward along the correct course, without yaw, without stalling, and without colliding.
Wang Yi said that Xi Jinping comprehensively and systematically expounded on the origin of the Taiwan issue and China's principled position, clearly pointing out that the Taiwan issue is the core of China's core interests, the foundation of the political foundation of Sino-US relations, and the first insurmountable red line in Sino-US relations. "Taiwan independence" is incompatible with peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese people will never agree to anyone who wants to split Taiwan from China. The US side is required to implement its statement of "four nos and one no intention".
Wang Yi said that the diplomacy of the heads of state is the "compass" and "fixed star" of Sino-US relations, and plays an irreplaceable strategic leading role in the development of bilateral relations. The meeting between the heads of state of China and the United States clarified a direction, which is to prevent Sino-US relations from derailing out of control and find a correct way for the two major powers to get along; a framework has been established, which is to jointly discuss and establish the guiding principles or strategic framework for Sino-US relations; a process has been launched, which is to implement the important consensus of the two heads of state and manage and stabilize Sino-US relations.
Wang Yi said that this "summit of the summit" is of special timing and great significance. It has started the process of "building bridges" between China and the United States, which will help the relationship between the two countries to calibrate the course and return to the right track. The most important action taken will profoundly affect the direction of Sino-US relations and the evolution of the international pattern.
